This session is a beginners guide to teaching and learning using an Integrated STEM pedagogy. The session will firstly conceptualise this approach to teaching and learning. This will be followed by a discussion of the rationale for Integrated STEM. Participants will then be offered a framework by which Integrated STEM based lesson sequences can be planned for. The session will conclude with key considerations and an opportunity for questions/ discussion..

Presenter: Duncan Symons
Dr. Duncan Symons is a lecturer in science and mathematics education within the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, The University of Melbourne. Duncan works with the University of Melbourne Network of Schools (UMNOS) as a critical friend. In this program he provides leadership and mentoring in the areas of mathematics education and STEM. Duncan consults to schools in the areas of inquiry, investigative and problem-based approaches to mathematics education. Duncan shares with teachers and pre-service teachers approaches to developing rich pedagogical environments, where mathematical language and productive talk are emphasised. He is also an advocate for how mathematics can be embedded within the broader curriculum. More recently, consultancy and research has led Duncan to investigating, the adoption and promotion of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as a means to achieve integration. Duncan works with in-service and pre-service teachers to develop approaches to the teaching and learning of integrated STEM where each of the constituent disciplines are carefully and deeply developed whilst also having students understand the interconnectedness of the disciplines within the greater learning.
