Online survey forms not meeting your homework needs? Looking for something more individualised and sophisticated for your students?
In this session, we will be introducing and demonstrating a free online homework system called WebWork. WebWork contains a large freely accessible database of questions that allows you to generate, assign, and grade individualised homework for your students. Problems can be generated with randomised values to encourage collaboration of solution processes rather than direct answer sharing.
Trial use of WebWork at the University of Melbourne has shown an increase in student engagement and persistence. Students have particularly enjoyed the instant feedback WebWork provides when attempting problems. Furthermore, WebWork provides teachers with a rich dataset about their students’ progress such as number of incorrect attempts and success rate per question. You will have plenty of time to play and interact with the system.
WebWork is written in PERL and LaTeX. While programming experience in these languages is not essential, comfort with manipulating existing code is recommended.
