Being a Professional Teacher of Mathematics  (Presenters: Jennifer Bowden, Helen Haralambous)

What does it mean to be a professional teacher of Mathematics? How can we juggle pedagogy, planning and practice? Jen Bowden and Helen Haralambous, Education Consultants for The Mathematical Association of Victoria will share their experiences as teachers, leaders and consultants in the diverse range of schools and education settings they work in. This workshop will explore successful strategies for balancing the roles of our profession.

About the presenter
Jen works with teachers to build teacher capacity, increase knowledge of curriculum content, develop pedagogies and establish school-wide improvement plans. She takes a variety of approaches whilst working with teachers, including modelled teaching, coaching, intensive curriculum planning, afterschool workshops and whole school professional development days. Whether it be exploring engaging picture books or investigating big picture thinking, her approach is always engaging, hands-on and guaranteed to challenge teachers’ thinking.

Helen is a secondary Mathematics Education consultant at the Mathematical Association of Victoria. She has been involved in education for over 30 years; this includes teaching secondary school mathematics in four different schools (boys' school, girls' school, co-educational and multi campus settings) and holding leadership positions including mathematics faculty coordinator, year level coordinator and leading teacher positions in numeracy, curriculum and professional development. Helen also spent 12 months working as an education consultant at the Australian Bureau of Statistics and has co-authored a series of Year 7–10 mathematics textbooks. Her interests include incorporating hands-on mathematical tasks, real life application activities, and games into the maths classroom.
